Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd (初音ミク -Project DIVA- 2nd?) is a rhythm video game which was devoloped by SEGA and Crypton Future Media, Inc. for the PlayStation Portable. It is the sequel to the first Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA game. It was released on 29 July 2010 in Japan with no international release.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is relatively identical to its predecessor, with the player pressing a series of buttons according to the sequence displayed on the screen to progress. The game uses four types of buttons (called "Melody Icons"), which are that of the four iconic PlayStation action buttons (cross, circle, triangle and square) on the PlayStation Portable. Various gray floating icons appear on the screen with a arrow rotating clockwise representing a timer while a colored icon will begin to appear from various sides of the screen and travel to their respective gray counterparts. The player must press the corresponding button at the time when the Melody Icon perfectly overlaps with the gray icon (in which the latter will have its arrow pointing upward). However, Project DIVA 2nd introduces new features that would became the standard in future titles. The directional buttons can now be used to hit the Melody Icons corresponding to its position (Up can hit Triangle notes, Right can hit Circle notes, Down can hit Cross notes, Left can hit Square notes). Two new sets of Melody Icons have also been added into the game which would be seen later in future Project DIVA titles: the arrow-shaped "Double Notes" notes and the strip-embedded "Long Notes". Double Notes require the player to press both the Action Button and its corresponding directional button at the same time (i.e. A Blue arrow means the player needs to press both Down and Cross at the same time). Long Notes have a "hold-and-release" function which the player holds down a particular single note button and release it at the right time.
One of the newest changes to debut in Project DIVA 2nd is the inclusion of duets, which allows two characters to appear in the game's PVs and allows the player to select two of their desired characters for that duet. The song select screen only displays the Vocal 1 character, but the Vocal 2 character can be seen when going into the Character Select screen for the song.
The three difficulties from the first game return, which are Easy, Normal, and Hard, with a new fourth difficulty debuting in this game called "Extreme", which requires the player to be more precise with their timing on Melody Icons compared to Hard. Like the first game, Easy and Normal difficulties are available at the start with Hard being unlocked by clearing songs on Normal difficulty. Unlocking Extreme difficulty requires players to clear songs on Hard difficulty. Like the first game, each difficulty of a song determines the number and type of icons the player will hit: Easy contains the fewest number of icons and usually are only one type of notes appear (typically the Circle button), Normal contains more icons and they only appear in two types (typically both Circle and Cross buttons), and finally, Hard will use all four types of icons available and may contain more than in Normal difficulty. Towards the end of the song's rhythm game, a Chance Time will begin and the rhythm game's HUD will be switched with two black bars on the top and bottom parts of the screen. Players can be awarded with large amount of bonus points if they succeed Chance Time with an unbroken combo. The Difficulty rating also gets a change, with the counter going from 5 stars being the MAX to 9 stars.
Another major change from the first Project DIVA game is the ranking which the player receives after completing a song. This time, the ranking is determined by the number of icons the player hits with a Cool or Fine Rating instead of reaching a specific score in the first game. (Though, to achieve a Perfect, the player is still required to hit all notes with an unbroken combo.) The player can check this on each song by pressing Triangle after selecting the song. The gameplay HUD also gets a change from the first game, with the Life Gauge now displaying a progression bar around its outer perimeter that progresses as the player chains combos. A new score rank called "Excellent is added, in between "Great" and "Perfect". The ratings that accompany the Melody Icons also get a change: instead of showing up on the bottom-right corner of the HUD during gameplay, they appear next to combo number. Also, button inputs that do not match the icon windows will now always be rated Worst.
Another feature that debuts in this game is the tutorial, which introduces new players to the gameplay, set to the tune of Otomania's cover of "Ievan Polkka". The tutorial would later be seen in all future Project DIVA titles. A new form of in-game currency debuts in this game called "DIVA Points" (shortened to DP) which can be used to unlock Modules and Room Items. DP can be obtained from clearing songs with the amount depending on the difficulty and how well the player Ranks on the song. Help Items also make their first appearances in this game. One Help Item per song can be used to help players get through a song they are struggling on (i.e. changing Safes and Sads into Fines, refilling the Life Gauge if it reaches zero).
Edit Mode[]
The Edit Mode feature also returns from the first game with an upgrade. Players are now able to let their desired character to move to other parts of the stage and up to two characters can be used, Chance Time can also be included in the Edit's gameplay, and lyrics can be inputted for the song's PV. Aside from the new features listed, as well as new stages and character motions, much of the Edit Mode features are mostly the same from the first game. Additionally, Edit Data from the first game can be imported over to Project DIVA 2nd, not including illustrations.
DIVA Room[]
The Miku Room from the first game is now renamed to DIVA Room and alongside it, all the characters now have their own rooms. Miku's is unlocked at the start of the game with everyone else's rooms having to be unlocked separately. The player can visit any character's room and watch them engage in various activities (i.e. playing games, interacting with other characters). The player can also give them presents, which will increase their happiness depending on the present you give them. Their mood will also be reflected when they appear on the game's menu screen.
Song List[]
There are a total of 66 songs available in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA 2nd. 47 songs are obtained normally by playing through the game, 9 songs are only available to listen at the DIVA Room and usable in Edit Mode, and 10 songs need to be purchased from the PlayStation Network (of which two of them are no longer available for purchase).

Bonus Songs[]
As with the previous game, bonus songs are not found in the regular rhythm game mode and instead can be played in the DIVA Room, Edit Mode, and the end credits. These songs were winning songs in SEGA and piapro's 2nd collaboration contest for Project DIVA 2nd.[1]

Modules make a return in this game with more to choose from, featuring 106, including 9 characters, and 97 different Modules (44 of which are returning Modules from the first Project DIVA). Unlike the first game, which required specific conditions to unlock them, Modules can now be unlocked by clearing a specific song and purchasing them with the DIVA Points in the game's shop. If the player has a save file of the firstgame in the same Memory Stick Project DIVA 2nd is saved in, they can import all Modules they obtained from the first game into Project DIVA 2nd without having to purchase them.
27 Modules were part of a contest held by SEGA and piapro where piapro users would submit a costume design for the contest and the winning entries would be made into Modules in the game for the characters to wear, with an additional 5 being added later as downloadable content.[2]

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Dreamy Theater 2nd[]
A PlayStation 3 companion software for Project DIVA 2nd titled Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Dreamy Theater 2nd (初音ミク -Project DIVA- ドリーミーシアター 2nd Hatsune Miku - Project DIVA - Dorīmī Shiatā 2nd?) was released on 4 August 2011 for the PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Store. The gameplay and content of Dreamy Theater 2nd is identical to the PSP game, albeit with enhanced 720p high-definition visuals supporting a frame rate of 60 FPS and PlayStation Trophies support (identical to the enhancements of the first Dreamy Theater over the first Project DIVA PSP game). Like with Dreamy Theater, the player will require a PSP system with Project DIVA 2nd to be connected to the PS3 console via USB connection to use Dreamy Theater 2nd; however, the player will only need to do this once to transfer the save file necessary to access the content in Dreamy Theater 2nd once rather than having the PSP constantly connected to the PS3.
In addition, Dreamy Theater 2nd allows the player to watch the songs' PVs with stereoscopic 3D for compatible TVs. Also, all songs and their rhythm games from the first Dreamy Theater (ie. all songs and charts in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA with the exception of "Sakura no Ame") are also available in Dreamy Theater 2nd. Dreamy Theater 2nd is also compatible with the DLC for the PSP version of Project DIVA 2nd (with the exception of certain DLC Modules and The iDOLM@STER songs ("GO MY WAY!!" and "relations")).
