Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd (初音ミク -Project DIVA- F 2nd?) is a 2014 rhythm video game that was released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita on 24 March 2014 in Japan, 18 November 2014 in North America, 21 November 2014 in Europe, and 11 December 2014 in Taiwan and Hong Kong. It is the sequel to Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F.
Gameplay[]
As with previous Project DIVA games, the player has to press buttons that match the Melody Icons to its corresponding window in time to the song being played. The usual Melody Icons (cross, circle, triangle, and square), as well as their respective Double Notes and Long Notes, return for this game, including the Star icons that debuted in Project DIVA F. F 2nd introduces two new variants to the Star icons: Double Stars and Linked Stars. Double Stars are big yellow stars that are marked with a "W" (just like the Double Notes) and require players to flick/scratch the analog sticks or the screen with two fingers or thumbs and will reward bonus points when successful. Linked Stars are Star icons that are connected to each other, requiring the player to flick/scratch a successful chain. Doing this will cause the lines to glow, revealing a shape, and it will also reward players additional bonus points.
Chance Time also returns and features the same mechanics that were introduced in Project DIVA F, such as filling up the Star Gauge is the lower left-corner of the screen to cause the Chance Time Star to glow yellow and flicking/scratching will reward big bonus points and cause song's PV to trigger an alternate ending. Another returning mechanic from Project DIVA F is the Technical Zone, which requires players to maintain an uninterrupted combo within a particular section of a song for additional bonus points.
The usual four difficulties return: Easy, Normal, Hard, and Extreme. The player starts with only Easy and Normal difficulties to play, with Hard difficulty being unlocked from clearing a song on Normal difficulty, and Extreme from clearing a song on Hard. A new mechanic introduced to this game is "Pick Up" with songs randomly marked with a ribbon next to the song name and surrounded by a rainbow border. Clearing these marked songs will give players bonus DIVA Points.
DIVA Room[]
The DIVA Room returns and retains its appearance from Project DIVA F. Much of the functionalities from Project DIVA F also return but now feature some new ones as well. The Communication Mode also receives an upgrade, with the petting functionality now being judged by a heart that appears on the top right corner of the screen. The heart will give the character's affinity a certain number of hearts depending on how much the character is pet, when maxes out in size, it grants a greater number of hearts, but if the character is pet too much the heart explodes and the affinity meter will decrease. If the heart manages to max out three times, a special bonus time called "FEVER!" starts where the character happily tries to avoid being pet while player has to max the heart out, successfully maxing out the heart during "FEVER!" will reward more affinity bonuses.
There is a new minigame called "Patty Cake" where the player has to match the character's hand movements with the touch screen on the PS Vita version and the analog sticks on the PS3 version. There are three rounds for the minigame, with reach round changing speed depending on how the player does in the previous round, and the player has to reach a minimum amount of bars that appear on the bottom part of the screen to advance to the next round otherwise they will fail the minigame. The "Made You Look" minigame, which has the player play a combined game of "Rock-Paper-Scissors" and "Made You Look" against the character, from Project DIVA F also returns.
Players can also give presents to the characters, with their affinity either increasing or decreasing depending on the gift given (i.e. giving Rin Orange Juice will increase her affinity significantly while giving her Vegetable Juice decreases it). Room Items also return with the same functionalities from F with some items causing a Room Event cutscene to occur. These cutscenes can also automatically happen randomly when a certain amount of time has passed. Up to three characters appear in these events, with a small cutscene showing the visiting characters entering and leaving the chosen character's room before and after the event respectively. Gadgets are another returning function, with two utilizing the PS Vita's Clock feature while others are dedicated to the game's other features (i.e. the TV lets the players watch song PVs, the Jukebox lets the players customize a setlist of songs for the DIVA Room, and Game Console letting the players play the game's credits minigame).
Edit Mode[]
Edit Mode returns and retains many of the functions from the previous game, but now feature some new character motions, stages, and background illustrations. Players can also upload their Edit Data online, which will then show up on ranking boards, which is categorize into two sections: one called "Edit Rankings" that ranks the most trending Edit Data based on the number favorites and download count and the other called "New Edits List" which lists the newest Edit Data uploaded online. Exclusive to the Japanese version of the game is piapro function which lets players download songs from piapro via the game as MP3 files and use those songs for their Edits. Agreement to the piapro's licensing terms must be made before downloading songs.
AR/Studio Mode[]
The AR and Studio Mode features from Project DIVA F return for the PS Vita and PS3 versions of Project DIVA F 2nd respectively. For the PS Vita version, AR Mode is an augmented reality feature that let's Miku and the other characters appear as if they are in the real world via the Vita's camera function. Two of the features in this mode include Portrait Mode, which let's players set a pose for the characters of their choosing and take a photo, which will then show up in the Vita's Photos app, and AR Live Mode, which requires the Live Studio Marker card that is included with the game. This feature has the characters performing songs as if they are performing on stage. For the PS3 version, Studio Mode retains some of the same functionalities from AR Mode but with stock backgrounds for the Photo Studio feature and an actual stage for the Live Mode feature, which is based on Yokohama Arena from the Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai 2013 event.

- Some character models have been slightly refined (e.g. Len now has a white band holding his ponytail and KAITO's shoes now have blue markings).

English Release[]
Upon its release, the English release of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd features the following localization changes:
- All in-game menu text has been fully translated or localized into English. Text that was already in English in the Japanese release were given slight adjustments (e.g. "Chance Time End" becomes "Chance Time Over")
- Most of the song names were either given translated English names or were romanized from their original Japanese names.
- Module, Room Item, Skin, and loading screen names were given translated English names.
- All song lyrics in Japanese are displayed in Romaji (while any katakana words made to sound like an English word were written in full English and in full capitals).
- English translations for almost all of the song lyrics were added to the game ("Kagerou Daze" is the only song to not have an English translation).
- The function to toggle between Japanese romaji and English translations was added to the Options Menu.
- A third option was added to the title screen, "Import", which allows players to transfer their save data from the Japanese version of Project DIVA F 2nd to the English version, provided save datas of both versions are on the same account.
- The note ratings "Fine", "Sad" were changed to "Good" and "Bad", with "Worse" being changed to "Miss", replacing "Awful" from Project DIVA F.
- When pressing a wrong button during gameplay, the false "Cool", "Good", "Safe", and "Bad" note ratings have a question mark added to them.
- The first Technical Zone for "Cantarella ~Grace Edition~"'s Normal, Hard, and Extreme difficulties last slightly longer than in the Japanese version.
- Normal difficulty has 36 notes rather than 29.
- Hard difficulty has 50 notes rather than 39.
- Extreme difficulty has 67 notes rather than 56.
- The result rankings "Cheap" has been changed to "So Close", replacing "Lousy" from Project DIVA F.
Asian Release[]
The Asian release of Project DIVA F 2nd shares its own set of localization changes.
- Most of the song names were either given translated English names or were translated in Chinese.
- Module, Room Item, Skin, and loading screen names were given translated Chinese or English names.
- Chinese translations for almost all of the song lyrics were added to the game (Like the English release, "Kagerou Daze" is the only song to not have an Chinese translation).
- The function to toggle between Japanese lyrics and Chinese translations was added to the Options Menu.
- A third option was added to the title screen, "Import", which allows players to transfer their save data from the Japanese version of Project DIVA F 2nd to the Asian version, provided both save datas of both versions are on the same account.
Additionally, all DLC Batches differ in content between the three versions of the game.
Promotion[]
In addition to SEGA and piapro's Module and Accessory submission contests, it was announced that two additional submission contests for Project DIVA F 2nd would be included. These submissions were for Loading Screen Illustrations and Edit Background Illustrations for the game's loading screen and Edit Mode respectively. Entries could be submitted to piapro between 12 July 2013 to 30 August 2013.[56] The winning entries were announced on 8 November 2013.[57]
The first playable demo of Project DIVA F 2nd was exhibited at the Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai 2013 event in the "Mirai Area" of the venue, but only the PS Vita version. The demo includes "Akatsuki Arrival" and "Colorful × Melody" as playable songs, as well as a first hand look at the new Linked Stars and Double Stars functions and Challenge Items feature for the rhythm game. Visitors who played the demo would receive a special sticker featuring Miku.[58][59] Another demo of the game was available at Tokyo Game Show 2013 in the SEGA Booth, this time including "Romeo and Cinderella" as a playable song. The special sticker was also given out to demo players at the event.[60]
Pre-order bonuses for the game include a limited time "Anywhere Laundry Bag" when purchasing the PS Vita version and an "Anytime Tote Bag" when purchasing the PS3 version.[18] First-run prints of the game will include a special "Todoke, Hibike Code" that allows players to purchase the digital version of F 2nd at a bargain price. Also included was a cleaning cloth with Miku from the PS Vita boxart printed on both sides. Originally scheduled to be available on 6 March 2014, the sale of the pouch was delayed to 27 March 2014 following the delay of the game itself.[61][29] Specific reatilers have also provided their own bonus items when pre-ordering the game, including clearfiles, mousepads, cards, tapestries, posters, etc.[62][63][64][65][33]
In-store promotional materials for the game were displayed at electronic stores in Japan at the start of 2014. These materials included B2 posters, poster banners, POP stands and stickers. Digital versions of the poster banners were made available to download from the game's official website.[66][67] From 25 January to 1 March 2014, SEGA held a nationwide trial event where visiting players can play a new demo of the game at six specific venues throughout Japan. The three songs playable in the demo are "Decorator", "Love-Hate", and "Luka Luka ★ Night Fever". Players that play the demo will be given a "first-come, first-serve" SEGA feat. HATSUNE MIKU project vinyard and one of two limited edition B2 posters based on the game's boxart covers.[68] This demo was also available to play during the SNOW MIKU 2014 event that took place during the Sapporo Winter Festival.
