Work in Progess

Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA MegaMix (初音ミク -Project DIVA- Mega 39's?) is a 2020 rhythm video game developed by Sega and Crypton Future Media. It was released on 13 February 2020 in Asia and on 15 May 2020 in North America, Europe and Australia.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

Players may customize the characters in a variety of costumes (Modules) and accessories as to how they appear in a song's promotional video (PV) while playing its rhythm game. They require the player to spend VP which can be earned by clearing rhythm game charts (alternatively, players may purchase the Unlock Key from the Nintendo Shop to instantly unlock all Modules in the game). Players may use Hairstyle Customisation which they can further customise their character by changing their character's hairstyle to that of another costume of that character.

Controls[edit | edit source]

MegaMix uses the same arcade control scheme as Future Tone on the Playstation 4. The charts are the exact same as their Arcade and Future Tone counterparts, making it easy to switch between versions. Melody Icons (can be changed from XYBA to arrows or Playstation symbols via Customization) will fly in from the sides of the screen and overlap with their silhouettes accordingly. Press their respective buttons in time with the music to receive a Timing Grade and Combo. There are unique charts for all songs across 4 difficulty levels; Easy, Normal, Hard, and Extreme, with some songs having a bonus EX Extreme chart. Unlike previous console games like F or F2nd, the arcade versions of ProDiva lack Star and Hold notes, and that holds true in MegaMix. Multi notes, where you press more than one button at once, and Slide notes, where you swipe the control sticks, have returned. Macros have also returned from Future Tone, allowing you to change the button mapping on your controller (except for the Control Sticks, +/- buttons, Home button, and Capture button, but these can be changed in your Switch's settings). These can be edited via the Customization menu.

Mix Mode is an all new mode exclusive to MegaMix. It is played by tilting the Joy-Con controllers left and right and pressing the bumpers/triggers in time with the charts. All songs have their own new and original Mix Mode charts for all 3 difficulties; Easy, Normal, and Hard.

Touch Play (enabled via Customization > Game Configuration > Arcade Mode > Touch Play > Enable) has also been added, allowing you to play all existing charts with an Arcade-esque control setup. It is played by tapping the four buttons on the bottom of the screen, Triangle/X, Square/Y, Cross/B, and Circle/A, to the rhythm of the songs. Slide notes are played by swiping the screen. Macros are unavailable in this mode, so Score Attack strategies  will use the Arcade method.

Development[edit | edit source]

Project DIVA MegaMix was first publicly announced on 1 July 2019 (1 day before the 10th anniversary of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA's release). The game's new mode, Mix Mode, was announced on 5 September 2019, along with the inclusion of emon(Tes.)'s song "Dreamin' Chuchu".[1] On 15 September 2019, during the game's stage event at Tokyo Game Show 2020, DECO*27's "HIBANA" and Mitchie M's "Ohedo Julia-Night" were announced to be included in the game.[2] The game's official website was updated on 18 October 2019 to include the list of 91 returing songs that were to be included in the game.[3] Omoi's "Teo" and Hachiya Nanashi's "JITTERBUG" were both later announced to be included in the game on 14 November 2019, as well as a feature called "T-Shirt Edit" which allows players to creater their own T-Shirt design for the characters to wear.[4]

On 23 July 2019, it was announced that there would be a T-Shirt design contest that would allow Piapro users design to a T-Shirt that, if selected, would appear in Project DIVA MegaMix. The contest lasted until 5 August 2019.

On 7 August 2019, the YouTube and Niconico channels for SEGA feat. Hatsune Miku project uploaded a music video for the game's theme song "Catch the Wave". However, the upload was later privated after it was discovered that the song was 90% finished. An upload with the finished version of the song was uploaded later on 29 August 2019.[5][6]

A playable demo version of the game was featured during the Hatsune Miku Magical Mirai 2019 event. The game was also previewed and discussed about during Tokyo Game Show 2019, which also included appearances by Mikudayo and Mikunano.

A gameplay trailer for MegaMix was later uploaded online on 18 October 2019.[3]

English version[edit | edit source]

Upon its release, the English version of Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA MegaMix was based off from Ver. 1.0.4 of the Asian versions of MegaMix though the following usual localisation changes have been made in previous titles in the series:

  • All in-game menu text has been fully translated into English.
  • Most of the song names were either given translated English names or were romanised from their original Japanese names. The English names of most songs featured in previous localised titles were used for said songs in this game.
  • In the Song Selection Screen, the songs are sorted according to Latin alphabetical ranges (A-B, C-D, E-H, I-L, M-N, O-Q, S, T, U-Z and 1-9).
  • All song lyrics in Japanese are displayed in Romaji (while any katakana words made to sound like an English word were written in full English and in full capitals). There are no full English lyrics for any of the songs, with the exception for "DYE" which is sung almost entirely in English.
  • The note ratings "Fine", "Sad", "Worse" were changed to "Good", "Bad", and "Miss" respectively.
  • The result ranking "MissXTake" has been changed to "DropXOut".
  • Ver. 1.00 (15 May 2020) - Initial release of the game.
  • Ver. 1.01 (15 May 2020)
  • Ver. 1.02 (29 July 2020) - Features the same changes in Ver. 1.0.5 the Asian versions of the game had.
  • Ver. 1.04 (17 September 2020) - Features the same changes in Ver. 1.0.7 the Asian versions of the game had.
