Gameplay[]
Like every other game in the series, the player taps the directional and PlayStation action buttons (Cross, Circle, Triangle and Square) that correspond to the displayed button and flicking either stick or swiping the PS Vita's screen/DualShock 4's touchpad for Star notes to the beat of various songs. DIVA X introduces a Rush Note, where after hitting the note regularly, the player can then tap either of the buttons that correspond to that note as quickly as possible to gain bonus points within a short amount of time. The "Linked-Star notes" and "Double Star" notes that were introduced in Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA F 2nd have been removed.
There is a new gameplay mode, known as Live Quest which is a story mode where the player completes a series of rhythm game quests in each song of all five Clouds. All rhythm game quests require a specific amount of Voltage (replacing the traditional score) to clear it. The game also has a traditional game mode, under the title "Free Play".
Cloud Requests[]
When playing a newly unlocked song in Cloud Requests, only two requests are available, with two additional requests being unlocked after clearing the Normal request:
Difficulty | Request | Request Info |
---|---|---|
Easy | Back to Basics | Play on Easy difficulty. |
Normal | Standard Session | Play on Normal difficulty. |
Hard | Amp Up The Difficulty | Play on Hard difficulty. |
Extreme | Record Breaking Challenge | Play on Extreme difficulty. |
If the Hard or Extreme request is cleared, three additional requests are unlocked which adds changes to the rhythm game by adding a preset Challenge Item. Clearing the harder challenge requests unlocks two more requests that add more preset Challenge Items:

---|---|---|
Normal/Hard/Extreme | Stealthy Target | Target appearance is delayed! |

Event Requests[]
Event Requests are special side missions that can be played concurrently with regular Cloud Requests. These requests first appear after clearing the Classic Cloud and two additional Clouds. Clearing the first Event Request is required to progress the game's story, with another three requests having those same conditions while a majority of other Event Requests are optional to play. Event Requests range from putting on live festivals to helping out the Virtual Singers. Unlike regular Cloud Requests, some Event Requests have specific rules that require players to only use a specific character or play songs and use Modules and Accessories of a specific Aura. Additionally, when the player clears the Voltage goal, the progress bar only changes form once. Event Requests also have special Module Drops when clearing the Chance Time with specific characters with those Modules, and in some cases Accessories, being unlocked if the request is successfully cleared. In Free Play, the song list is set up like in previous entries in the series, Module gameplay effects in Cloud Requests, as well as Rate Up Notes are negated, and Voltage scores are replaced with regular gameplay scores. Free Play also brings back the combo Ranks that grade players based on how well they chain their combos during the song. Also returning are the Help and Challenge Items which players can use to make gameplay easier or harder. The Item's icon will be displayed on the top right corner of the screen during gameplay. This game debuts some new Challenge Items alongside bringing back other Items from previous games:

Help Items | |
Extra Leeway | The correct timing requirements are relaxed for COOL, GOOD, and SAFE. |
Double Killer | Double Targets no longer appear. |
Star Changer | Allows you to hit ☆ Targets with L1/R1. |

Overclocker | Melody Icons move faster than usual. |
Nano-targeter | Melody Icons and targets are smaller than usual. |
Wibbly Wobbly | Melody Icons fly around however they want. |
Chaos Storm | Melody Icons fly in from random directions. |
Using Help Items will result in a green heart appearing on the song's name and difficulty section after clearing it and will not count towards the player's records.
Also, Module Drops in Free Play are optional and can be set up by selecting a Module in the Transform window in the Customize menu. Players can also select any different song's stage for the song of their choosing.
Concert Editor[]
Taking the place of the traditional Edit Mode from previous titles, Concert Editor allows players to change camer angles, lighting, stage particle triggers, and Module Drop events to available songs at their own accord. Some songs that are edited down from their original versions in regular gameplay modes can be played in their full versions.
The PlayStation 4 version of the game adds an exclusive feature that lets players view their Edits through the PlayStation VR headset.
Song List[]
The game contains a total of 30 playable songs, not including "Ievan Polkka" which reprises its role as the tutorial song. Six of the songs are medleys and two other songs are returning from previous entries in the Project DIVA and Project Mirai series.[19]

Some Modules have to be obtained by clearing specific requests in their regular Cloud Requests are through Event Requests and classified as Rare Modules. With Aura's being part of the game's core features, all Modules are attributed with one of the five Auras, giving a +20% Voltage bonus when it is used in a song that is attributed with the same Aura (e.g. Powder, a Cute Module, gives a +20% bonus when used in "Patchwork Staccato", a Cute song).
